Fethiye & Oludeniz Guide — Blue Lagoon, Paragliding & Lycian Way

Fethiye and Oludeniz on Turkey’s southwestern Mediterranean coast are among the country’s most beautiful coastal destinations. The Blue Lagoon of Oludeniz, with its impossibly turquoise water enclosed by a curving white sand beach, is one of Turkey’s most photographed landscapes. Combined with world-class paragliding, ancient Lycian ruins, secluded coves accessible only by boat, and the start of the famous Lycian Way hiking trail, this region offers something for every type of traveller. This guide covers the best things to do in Fethiye and Oludeniz in 2026.

Oludeniz Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon is a protected nature park where a sheltered bay creates water so calm and clear it looks like a swimming pool. The entrance fee to the national park beach is about 3 euros, and the beach has sun loungers, showers, and small restaurants. The water is shallow near the shore making it ideal for families with children. The open beach outside the national park is free and stretches for a long promenade lined with restaurants and bars. Swimming conditions are excellent from May to October. Arrive early in summer to secure a good spot on the national park beach as it gets crowded by midday. For a different perspective, the view from Babadag Mountain above is spectacular, especially if you see it while paragliding down.

Paragliding from Babadag Mountain

Tandem paragliding from Babadag Mountain, at 1,969 metres, is one of Turkey’s most thrilling experiences. You launch from near the summit and glide for 25 to 45 minutes over the Blue Lagoon, forests, and coastline before landing on the beach. No experience is needed as you fly tandem with a licensed pilot who handles everything. Flights cost between 80 and 120 euros including hotel pickup, transport to the launch site, the flight, and GoPro video footage. Morning flights offer calmer conditions while afternoon thermals allow longer flights with more altitude. There are dozens of operators in Oludeniz, choose one with good reviews and certified pilots. The season runs from April to November, with summer being the busiest period.

Fethiye Town and Markets

Fethiye itself is a pleasant coastal town with a lively Tuesday market selling fresh produce, spices, textiles, and leather goods at local prices. The fish market in the centre is a unique dining experience where you buy fresh fish from the stalls and take it to surrounding restaurants who grill it for a small cooking fee, adding meze and salads. Kayakoy Ghost Village, a short drive inland, is an atmospheric abandoned Greek settlement with hundreds of roofless stone houses and churches, a haunting memorial to the 1923 population exchange. The Lycian rock tombs of Amintas, carved into the cliff face above the town, are illuminated at night and visible from the harbour. Fethiye harbour itself is a beautiful starting point for boat trips and gulet cruises along the coast.

Boat Trips and Butterfly Valley

The 12 Islands boat trip from Fethiye is a classic day out, sailing to several islands and coves for swimming, snorkelling, and lunch on board, costing about 15 to 25 euros per person. Butterfly Valley, a steep-sided gorge accessible only by boat from Oludeniz, is home to over 100 butterfly species and has a small beach with basic camping and a rustic bar. Boats run regularly from Oludeniz beach for about 5 euros return. Saklkent Gorge, Turkey’s longest and deepest canyon at 18 kilometres, is reachable as a half-day trip from Fethiye. You wade through knee-deep ice-cold meltwater between towering rock walls, an exhilarating experience in the heat of summer. For more beach destinations, explore our comprehensive guide.

The Lycian Way

The Lycian Way is a 540-kilometre waymarked hiking trail stretching from Fethiye to Antalya along the Mediterranean coast, rated as one of the world’s best long-distance walks. You do not need to walk the entire route. Popular sections near Fethiye include the trail from Oludeniz to Butterfly Valley and the stretch from Faralya to Kabak, both offering stunning coastal views, ancient ruins, and secluded beaches. Spring and autumn are the best seasons for hiking, with comfortable temperatures and wildflowers in spring.
