Ultimate Turkey Packing List — Everything You Need for Your Trip

Packing for Turkey in 2026 requires a balance between comfort, practicality, and respect for local culture. Whether you are exploring the bustling streets of Istanbul, hiking the fairy chimneys of Cappadocia, or relaxing on the Aegean coast, having the right items in your suitcase makes all the difference. This comprehensive packing list covers every season and region so you can travel with confidence.

Clothing Essentials

Turkey’s dress code is generally relaxed, but modest clothing is appreciated, especially outside major tourist areas. Pack lightweight, breathable fabrics for summer and layers for spring and autumn. A good approach is to bring versatile pieces that you can mix and match. Neutral colours work well and help you blend in. For women, a pair of comfortable trousers, a midi skirt, and several tops that cover the shoulders are ideal. Men should pack lightweight chinos or trousers and collared shirts for nicer restaurants. Jeans are fine year-round but can be uncomfortable in the July and August heat. If you need advice on what to wear in Turkey, we have a detailed dress code guide.

Footwear

Comfortable walking shoes are the single most important item in your suitcase. Turkey’s historical sites involve a lot of walking on uneven cobblestones, ancient ruins, and steep hills. Bring a pair of broken-in trainers or walking shoes with good grip. Sandals are useful for the beach and casual evenings but avoid flip-flops for sightseeing — the terrain at places like Ephesus and Pamukkale demands proper footwear. Slip-on shoes are handy for mosque visits where you need to remove your shoes quickly.

Mosque Visit Essentials

If you plan to visit mosques — and you absolutely should — pack a lightweight scarf for women to cover their heads and shoulders. Some mosques provide coverings at the entrance, but having your own is more comfortable and hygienic. Both men and women need to cover their knees. Wear or carry clothing that covers your legs below the knee. Socks are also essential since shoes must be removed before entering any mosque.

Sun Protection

The Turkish sun is strong, particularly between May and September. A wide-brimmed hat or cap is essential, along with quality sunglasses with UV protection. Bring high-SPF sunscreen from home as imported brands in Turkey can be expensive. A lightweight, long-sleeved shirt provides extra protection during midday excursions to open-air archaeological sites. Lip balm with SPF is another item many travellers forget but appreciate having.

Technology and Gadgets

Turkey uses European-style two-pin round plugs (Type C and Type F). Bring a universal travel adapter or a European adapter. A portable power bank is extremely useful for long days of sightseeing when your phone battery drains from maps, photos, and translations. A good quality camera or smartphone is essential for capturing the incredible scenery. If you plan to take a hot air balloon ride in Cappadocia, make sure your phone or camera is fully charged — sunrise over the fairy chimneys is a once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunity.

Health and Toiletries

Pack a basic first-aid kit with plasters, antiseptic cream, and any prescription medications you need. Include motion sickness tablets if you plan to take boat trips along the Bodrum coast or a Bosphorus cruise. Insect repellent is useful for summer evenings, especially near the coast. Hand sanitiser and wet wipes are convenient for eating street food or using public facilities. Turkish pharmacies (eczane) are well-stocked, but having your essentials from home saves time and worry.

Documents and Money

Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date. Most nationalities need an e-Visa, which you should obtain online before travelling. Print a copy and keep a digital backup on your phone. Bring at least one credit or debit card — Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted. Carry some Turkish Lira in cash for smaller shops, markets, and tipping. A money belt or hidden pouch adds security in crowded areas like the Grand Bazaar. Check our Turkey trip cost guide for budget planning.

Day Bag

A lightweight, foldable daypack is invaluable. You need something to carry your water bottle, sunscreen, camera, and snacks during day trips. Choose a bag with a zip closure for security in busy markets. A crossbody bag works well for city exploration. Avoid carrying valuables in easily accessible pockets, especially in tourist hotspots. Turkey is very safe for tourists, but basic precautions are sensible anywhere.

Seasonal Additions

For spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October), add a light rain jacket and a warm layer for cool evenings. A packable down jacket is perfect for Cappadocia, where early mornings can be chilly even in May. Summer visitors (June to August) should pack swimwear, a beach towel (or a Turkish peshtemal towel — lighter and faster drying), and a cover-up for walking from the beach to restaurants. Winter travellers (November to March) need a proper coat, warm layers, a scarf, gloves, and waterproof boots. Check our Turkey in winter guide and best time to visit guide for seasonal details.

What NOT to Pack

Leave expensive jewellery at home — you will not need it and it attracts unwanted attention. Do not pack too many clothes. Turkey has excellent and affordable laundry services, and you will likely want to buy Turkish souvenirs that take up suitcase space. Avoid bringing large quantities of food as Turkish cuisine is incredible and extremely affordable. Skip the travel iron — hotels provide this service. Finally, do not overpack toiletries. Turkish shops and pharmacies stock everything you could need.
