Pamukkale & Hierapolis Guide — Cotton Castle Terraces, Hot Springs & Tips (2026)

Pamukkale — meaning “Cotton Castle” in Turkish — is one of the world’s most extraordinary natural wonders. These brilliant white travertine terraces, formed over thousands of years by calcium-rich thermal waters, cascade down the hillside like a frozen waterfall. Combined with the ancient city of Hierapolis perched above, it’s an unmissable stop on any Turkey trip.

What Makes Pamukkale Special

The travertine terraces are formed by hot springs depositing calcium carbonate as the water flows down the mountain. The result is a dreamlike landscape of gleaming white pools filled with warm, mineral-rich water. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Turkey’s most photographed locations.

How to Visit the Travertine Terraces

You must remove your shoes to walk on the terraces — the calcium formations are delicate and protected. The warm water (around 35°C) flows through shallow pools where you can wade and take photos. Visit early morning or late afternoon for the best light and fewer crowds. The south entrance is less crowded than the main north gate.

Hierapolis Ancient City

Sitting directly above the terraces, Hierapolis was founded as a Roman spa city in 190 BC. Explore the remarkably preserved theater (seating 12,000), the extensive necropolis (one of the largest in Anatolia), the Temple of Apollo, and the fascinating Archaeology Museum housed in the former Roman baths.

Cleopatra’s Antique Pool

Legend says Cleopatra herself bathed in this thermal pool. Today, you can swim among sunken Roman columns in warm, carbonated mineral water (36°C year-round). It’s a surreal experience. Entry costs around 130 TL (separate from the main site ticket). Arrive early to avoid long queues.

Getting to Pamukkale

Pamukkale is located near the town of Denizli in southwestern Turkey. From Istanbul, you can fly to Denizli Cardak Airport (1h 15min), then take a 45-minute shuttle. Overnight buses from Istanbul (10-11 hours) and day trips from popular tourist areas are also available.

Where to Stay

Stay in the village of Pamukkale for easy access to the terraces. Budget pensions with thermal pools in their gardens start from $20/night. For more luxury, Denizli has modern hotels. Many travelers visit as a day trip from nearby towns.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) offer the best weather and smallest crowds. Summer can be brutally hot on the exposed terraces. Winter visits are atmospheric but cooler.

Tips for Visiting

Bring sunglasses — the white terraces are blindingly bright in sunshine. Wear a swimsuit under your clothes for the pools. Bring a plastic bag for your shoes. Allow at least 3-4 hours to explore both the terraces and Hierapolis properly.
