The Letter to Sardis (Revelation 3:1–6) Explained

A reputation for life but spiritually dead — the call to wake up, strengthen what remains and walk in white.

Alive in name only

Sardis had a reputation for being alive but was spiritually dead. The wealthy old capital of Lydia had twice been captured by surprise — a fitting backdrop for 'wake up.'

A few faithful names

Not all had defiled their garments; a few would walk with Christ in white. The letter warns He will come 'like a thief' if they do not watch.

The white garments

Overcomers are clothed in white and kept in the book of life — striking in a city whose wealth came partly from the wool and dye trade.
