Seven Churches of Revelation — your route map in western Turkey
In Revelation chapters 2 and 3, John addresses seven churches in Asia Minor — today’s western Turkey. Ephesus, Smyrna (Izmir), Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea form a drivable loop from Izmir through Manisa to Pamukkale. The seven letters in order
1) Ephesus — left first love (Selçuk). 2) Smyrna — faithful through persecution (Izmir). 3) Pergamum — where Satan’s throne was (Bergama). 4) Thyatira — love, faith, service (Akhisar). 5) Sardis — wake up (Sart). 6) Philadelphia — open door, little strength (Alaşehir). 7) Laodicea — lukewarm (near Pamukkale). Each church has a dedicated page on this site with letter context, ruins today and practical visit notes.
How many days do you need?
Minimum 5 days for a rushed loop; 7 days is ideal for unhurried site time, Virgin Mary House and Pamukkale. 10 days adds Istanbul Paul context or Cappadocia cave churches. Cruise passengers from Kusadasi often take 2–3 church day trips — Ephesus, Pergamon or Laodicea — rather than the full circuit. Izmir hub and driving logic
Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB) near Izmir is the natural gateway. Day 1–2: Smyrna and Ephesus. Day 3: Pergamon north. Days 4–5: Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia east of Izmir. Day 6: Laodicea and Pamukkale south. We avoid backtracking with private drivers who know church-group pacing — not shared coach timetables.
