The Letter to Smyrna (Revelation 2:8–11) Explained
The suffering church that received no rebuke — persecution, the crown of life and the second death in Revelation's letter to Smyrna.
A church without rebuke
Smyrna and Philadelphia are the only two churches that receive no correction. Christ acknowledges their affliction and poverty, yet calls them rich.
The crown of life
Believers are told to be faithful unto death to receive the crown of life. Smyrna was known for athletic games, making the 'crown' imagery vivid to its readers.
Polycarp connection
Decades later, Bishop Polycarp was martyred in Smyrna, giving the letter's call to faithfulness under persecution a concrete local story guides share in Izmir.
