How much connection time you actually need
Count from scheduled arrival to scheduled departure, then subtract immigration, possible bag claim, drive, security and airline check-in. We usually quote only from six usable hours upward. Eight hours is the sweet spot for one honest Old City block. Twelve hours can add a Bosphorus viewpoint or a calm lunch — never Topkapı, Grand Bazaar shopping day and a cruise on one layover. Share both flight numbers, terminals and whether bags are through-checked when you write /contact.
IST vs SAW — same product, different drive
Istanbul Airport (IST) is the usual long-haul hub — typically faster to Sultanahmet than Sabiha Gökçen (SAW). SAW connections to the European Old City need more road buffer, especially in peak traffic. Same-airport return is the default. What fits a 6, 8 or 12-hour window
Six hours: Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque exteriors/allowed interiors with Hippodrome photos — place guides linked above — then return. Eight hours: add Basilica Cistern or a short Topkapı courtyard block, not both at museum pace. Ten to twelve hours: Old City core plus one water view or a simple lunch; skip /tours/istanbul/shopping-tour and full /tours/istanbul/food-tour — those need hotel bases. Visa, transit and immigration reality
