Mount Nemrut Guide: Sunrise & Ancient Heads
What is Mount Nemrut?
A 2,150m peak with giant Hellenistic stone heads — one of Turkey's most surreal UNESCO sites.
Sunrise visit
Most travelers summit pre-dawn for sunrise over the heads. Dress warmly — temperatures near freezing even in summer.
How to get there
Fly to Adiyaman or Malatya. Our southeast packages include Nemrut, Gaziantep and Mardin in one route.
Combine with
Gaziantep food, Mardin old town and Gobekli Tepe for a deep southeast Turkey circuit.
Sunrise at the heads
2,150m summit with colossal Commagene statues — pre-dawn hike or drive from Adiyaman. Summer easiest; winter snow possible.
How to include in a trip
Add 2 nights to eastern routes — pair with /packages/eastern-turkey-adventure or southeast heritage. Not a day trip from Istanbul.
What to bring
Warm layers year-round at summit, headlamp for dark ascent, cash for tea vendors. Tours start 03:00–04:00 from Kahta.
Kahta and Adiyaman base
Most tours sleep Kahta village — basic hotels, early breakfast. Adiyaman airport (ADF) has limited flights; many route via Gaziantep.
Commagene kingdom history
King Antiochus I built the terrace for gods and ancestors — Persian, Greek and Armenian fusion. Guides explain east-west cultural blend at sunrise.
Combine with Urfa and Gobekli Tepe
Extend eastern route 2–3 days for Göbekli Tepe prehistory and Sanliurfa pools — /packages/eastern-turkey-adventure template.
