Grand Bazaar
What the market is
The covered core dates to the fifteenth century and grew into a city of shops. Main streets sell jewellery, leather, textiles and tourist souvenirs. Side streets hold better metalwork and ceramics. The Spice Bazaar by the Golden Horn is a different market on a different walk — place guide /travel-guide/spice-bazaar — useful after a Bosphorus segment or as the finish of a shopping day, not a substitute for Kapalıçarşı.
Buying without pressure
Start below the asking price, stay polite, and walk away. Cash sometimes helps. Licensed carpet shops that offer shipping certificates are the ones we use when a client wants a serious rug. A guide who already knows which doors to skip is worth more than another hour of wandering. Blog depth: /blog/grand-bazaar-guide and /blog/buying-turkish-carpets.
How we sell the visit
Monument afternoon with a bazaar block: /tours/istanbul/private-city-tour. Full private shopping day with trusted dealers and VAT/shipping briefing: /tours/istanbul/shopping-tour. National map: /turkey-shopping-tours. Bags-only chauffeur: /private-driver/istanbul. We do not invent a second Grand Bazaar product URL or a commission-mill stop.
When and how long
Typical hours are morning to early evening, closed Sundays — confirm for your date. Forty-five to ninety minutes is enough if you already walked Hagia Sophia and Topkapı. Two to three hours suits serious buyers. Cruise guests with two hours total should read /travel-guide/istanbul-cruise-port-tour before promising both the palace and the bazaar.
