Buying Turkish Carpets: Quality, Shipping & Scams to Avoid
Handmade vs machine
Knot density claims, wool vs silk blends, and why a certificate of origin matters.
Where to buy
Grand Bazaar side lanes and licensed exporters — not fixed commission bus stops.

What “handmade” should mean
A serious rug is knotted or woven by hand — wool, silk or a blend — with a clear origin story. Machine-made pieces have a place as décor; they should not be sold as village heirlooms. Ask for knot type, materials and a written description before you pay. Kilims are flatweaves; they pack lighter than pile carpets.
Quality tells without the mythology
Turn a corner: look at the back for even work. Natural dyes age differently from bright synthetics. “Antique” claims need paperwork. Silk on silk is fragile for floor use — wall hangings differ. A licensed guide helps you ask the right questions; they do not invent mystical stories to close a sale.
Where we take serious buyers
Grand Bazaar side lanes and licensed exporters who ship with certificates — place guide /travel-guide/grand-bazaar. Private day: /tours/istanbul/shopping-tour. Hub: /turkey-shopping-tours. We do not pad itineraries with fixed commission carpet mills. National souvenir map: /blog/turkey-shopping-guide.
Red flags and commission mills
Refuse same-day “must buy now” pressure, unsigned shipping quotes, and bus-stop showrooms that appear after a free lunch. If the dealer will not put origin, materials and freight in writing, walk away. Tea is hospitality — never a contract. Jewelry and leather have their own scam patterns: /blog/buying-turkish-jewelry, /blog/turkish-leather-shopping.
Bargaining without theatre
Start below the ask, stay polite, walk away. Fixed-price studios exist; your guide will say which is which. Cash sometimes helps; cards at established dealers are normal. Never feel trapped by tea.
Shipping, insurance and VAT
Licensed shops roll, insure and quote sea or air freight in writing — often four to eight weeks by sea. Keep the invoice for customs and insurance. Turkey VAT refund at the airport needs receipts and desk time before your flight — we brief you before you buy large pieces.
What this guide is not
Not a shop landing page. Not a cooking class. Not a thin Antalya mall tour. Ceramics: /blog/turkish-ceramics-guide. Jewelry: /blog/buying-turkish-jewelry. Leather: /blog/turkish-leather-shopping.
