Gold purity — read the stamp
Turkish gold jewelry should carry a purity mark (ayar) — commonly 14K or 18K for fashion pieces, higher for investment bars and coins which are a different buy. Refuse unstamped “special deals.” Ask the seller to show the stamp under good light before you pay. Weight × purity × day’s gold reference is the sanity check; labour and design sit on top.
Diamonds and coloured stones
For diamonds, ask for written carat, colour, clarity and cut — and a certificate when the price justifies it. No paperwork on a high-ticket stone is a walk-away.
