Derinkuyu Underground City
What was cut, and when
The tuff is soft enough to carve with hand tools and hardens when it meets air. Derinkuyu was used as a refuge in the Byzantine centuries, with stables near the surface, then kitchens, storage, a winery, a shaft for air, a missionary school room, a cruciform church, and round doors of stone that roll across the corridors. Earlier Phrygian or Hittite use is often claimed for the first cuttings. Treat that as possible, not as a label on every room you walk. The city you visit is the refuge.
The levels you actually descend
Eight levels are mapped. About four are open, and the route is one-way, down and then up another stair. Ceilings drop. The ventilation shaft is the photograph: a well that also brought air to the floors below. The stone doors have a hole at the centre, cut so they could be locked from inside. If tight passages are a problem, say so before we leave the hotel. The open valleys are the alternative, not a lower floor of the same site. Kaymaklı, the other large city, is /travel-guide/kaymakli-underground-city. A local story of a tunnel between them is not a passage you can walk.
How it sits in a day
From Göreme the drive is under an hour. The visit itself is about an hour if you are not held at the shaft. The published private day is /tours/cappadocia/underground-city: one city, then pottery in Avanos and a viewpoint. Ihlara is a different direction and a different length of day. Doing Derinkuyu, Kaymaklı and the gorge before lunch is how shared tours ruin all three. Pick Derinkuyu when the point is depth. Pick Kaymaklı when you want more rooms and a shorter drop.
Overview for travelers
Derinkuyu is the deep underground city south of Göreme. The cutting reaches about 85 metres and eight levels. Visitors walk roughly the upper four. In 2025 it received 375,870 visitors. It is not the same morning as Kaymaklı plus Ihlara. This guide expands on what to expect on the ground — beyond generic advice — from a team that runs private tours across Turkey daily. Step-by-step on arrival
When you land in Turkey, having derinkuyu underground city sorted reduces stress. Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gokcen have SIM vendors, ATMs and official taxi desks — we still recommend pre-booked transfers on arrival day. Keep passport, e-Visa (if required) and hotel address handy for immigration and drivers.
Common mistakes to avoid
Changing money at aggressive street rates, booking unlicensed tours from hotel touts, and overloading one day with Ephesus plus Pamukkale are frequent errors. Pack for walking and mosque modesty even on coast trips. Trust licensed TURSAB operators for guiding and transfers.
