Zelve Open Air Museum and Paşabağ

Zelve, the village that moved

Three valleys meet here, cut with houses, a mill, tunnels between the walls, and churches including a grape church painted with vines. People lived in the rock until rockfalls in the 1950s forced a move to Yeni Zelve, the new village on the plain. You walk the old streets empty. It is the best place in Cappadocia to see a whole community’s plan, not a single church. The path is uneven and has low tunnels. Skip the tunnels if you disliked the idea of Derinkuyu.

Paşabağ, the chimneys

Paşabağ, also called Monks Valley, is the stand of capped cones. The photograph is the multi-stem chimney. Some cones hold a cell and a carved cross, which is why the valley has a monastic name. It is a short, open walk, fine for anyone who will not do Zelve’s tunnels. This is the place the word ‘fairy chimney’ refers to on a first-day tour. Love Valley’s taller chimneys, below Uçhisar, are a second landscape and sit on the hike page, not here.

Devrent, and the rest of the north loop

Devrent, Imagination Valley, is the next pull-off: pink and grey cones that guides name as animals. There is usually no ticket and nothing to enter. It works as a ten-minute stop between Paşabağ and Avanos, where the red tour adds pottery. The painted churches are not here. They are /travel-guide/goreme-open-air-museum. A private north day can be museum plus Paşabağ, or Zelve plus Paşabağ, not all of them plus a balloon before lunch. The comparison of north and south is /travel-guide/cappadocia-red-and-green-tours.

Overview for travelers

Zelve and Paşabağ are one archaeological landscape between Göreme and Avanos. Zelve is a cave village emptied in the 1950s. Paşabağ is the fairy chimneys with caps, including cells monks used. Together they drew 1,141,219 visitors in 2025. This guide expands on what to expect on the ground — beyond generic advice — from a team that runs private tours across Turkey daily. Rules and prices change; we note practical tips our guides share with guests.

Step-by-step on arrival

When you land in Turkey, having zelve open air museum sorted reduces stress. Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gokcen have SIM vendors, ATMs and official taxi desks — we still recommend pre-booked transfers on arrival day. Keep passport, e-Visa (if required) and hotel address handy for immigration and drivers.

Common mistakes to avoid

Changing money at aggressive street rates, booking unlicensed tours from hotel touts, and overloading one day with Ephesus plus Pamukkale are frequent errors. Pack for walking and mosque modesty even on coast trips. Trust licensed TURSAB operators for guiding and transfers.

When to ask for expert help
