Ihlara Valley

The gorge

The river cut a canyon up to about a hundred metres deep through the same tuff. You enter on foot from Ihlara village down a long stair — several hundred steps — or from Belisırma, the village in the middle, which is flatter. The classic private walk is the section between those two, about three to four kilometres, in shade for much of the year, with wooden bridges and a lunch of trout in Belisırma if you want to sit. The full fourteen kilometres to Selime is a trek, not a morning attached to an underground city.

Churches in the rock

Ağaçaltı, the Church under the Tree, sits near the Ihlara stair: a cross-in-square plan and frescoes that have faded in the damp. Yılanlı, Snake Church, is nearby. Kokar and Pürenliseki continue the same cliff line. Sümbüllü is cut higher, with a facade that still reads as a church from the path. Kırkdamaltı, also called St George, is toward Belisırma and is unusual because a fresco names a Christian woman and a Seljuk official together — a reminder that this gorge was not sealed off from the medieval plateau. None of these is the Dark Church. Paint is damaged. The architecture and the river are the point.

Selime, after the walk

Selime Monastery is a complex of rooms, a kitchen and a church large enough that guides call it a cathedral, carved into the cliff where the gorge opens. It is not on the short Ihlara–Belisırma path. The vehicle meets you and drives to it, or you skip the long walk and go there directly when the day is already long. This whole south is the green tour in /travel-guide/cappadocia-red-and-green-tours. The underground city on that kind of day is usually /travel-guide/kaymakli-underground-city, and only if we are not also trying to do Derinkuyu.

Overview for travelers

Ihlara Valley is the canyon of the Melendiz River, southwest of Göreme, with cave churches in the cliffs and a poplar path at the water. The usual walk is a few kilometres between Ihlara village and Belisırma, not the whole gorge. Selime’s rock monastery is the north end and needs its own stop. This guide expands on what to expect on the ground — beyond generic advice — from a team that runs private tours across Turkey daily. Rules and prices change; we note practical tips our guides share with guests.

Step-by-step on arrival

When you land in Turkey, having ihlara valley sorted reduces stress. Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gokcen have SIM vendors, ATMs and official taxi desks — we still recommend pre-booked transfers on arrival day. Keep passport, e-Visa (if required) and hotel address handy for immigration and drivers.

Common mistakes to avoid

Changing money at aggressive street rates, booking unlicensed tours from hotel touts, and overloading one day with Ephesus plus Pamukkale are frequent errors. Pack for walking and mosque modesty even on coast trips. Trust licensed TURSAB operators for guiding and transfers.
